Maharashtra government has planned to set up Environment cells in all municipal corporations and councils to grant environment clearances for building proposals, more than 1,50,000 sq feet by urban local bodies.
Last year the Union ministry of environment, forests and climate, also issued a notification to local bodies, to process building proposals for environment clearances. It was done in order make it easy for the government to take initiative in the business.
In this case, the state government has invited objections/suggestions from the citizens, about the proposal. The cell will appraise and evaluate the environmental concerns of the area falls under its jurisdiction.
It will supervise the environment audit process, use to be carried out by the building auditors and carry out random audits of the projects for verifying conformities of environmental circumstances .
In case of non-compliance, it can commend to the local planning authority, to impose a financial penalty. It can also recommend legitimate action against the qualified environment auditors ,if it discover any regresses or lapses in their work.
