This will be a benchmark event, the drilling of India’s first urban tunnel is set to complete by
August end. It is a part of Eastern Freeway project, 500 metre twin tunnel are being built near
the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. It is a country’s first tunnel systems to be built within city
limits for urban transport.
The drilling work of one of the two tunnel is nearly complete. MMRDA( Mumbai Metropolitan
Region Development Authority) are assured to full-fledge open the tunnel by December and
one by 2013.
The MMRDA proposed the twin tunnel on the Anik-Panjarpol link road, he road stretchs from
Anik in Wadala to Panjarpol in Chembur and is the part of the largest Eastern Freeway which
proposes to build a 22km road from south Mumbai to Ghatkopar.
The estimate cost of thse two tunnels is 210 cror. The tunnels starts at BARC and ends at
Guatam Nagar near, Panjarpol.
Important: 4,694 families rehabilited to make way for the tunnel.
