The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana has been attracting a large number of home seekers from the city.

As many as 14,290 people have already applied for households under the scheme, while the number is expected to surge in the next few days.

Online registration for the scheme that started from July 19 will continue till August 15. During the period, the municipal authorities are expecting to receive more than 50,000 applications.

Sikander Ali, the project in-charge and executive engineer in the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), recently told TOI that people across income groups are applying under the scheme. “We have opened more than 250 centres in the city for the convenience of people. Besides, political parties and social organisations are also assisting home seekers in filing applications,” he said.

The home seekers may visit the nearest internet cafe and upload the application, along with images of the required documents such as Aadhaar card, proof of income and address proof among others. The application forms will be sent to the central government, which will announce the final list of beneficiaries.

The civic body is encouraging people belonging to various sections of society to avail the benefit of the scheme.

Homeless citizens residing in the city for the past 15 years will be eligible for the scheme. But based on their annual income, they would be divided into different groups, which will eventually decide the quantum of subsidy for the beneficiaries. The central government will offer subsidy to the beneficiaries for which income will be the deciding factor.

For the rehabilitation of slum dwellers, the government is planning to involve private developers, who will develop affordable houses through credit-linked subsidy schemes. Affordable housing in partnership with public and private sector agencies has also been planned.
