A huge population of India is living in Slums. Almost 9.30 crore people lives in urban slums in various cities in India. Maharashtra is leading in the statistics of slums. Almost 1.81 crore people lived in slum as per 2011 census and the figure has reached 2.25 crore people living in urban slums in Maharashtra. Maharashtra has identified 17000 slum pockets which also includes Asia’s biggest slum pocket of Dharavi.

Followed by Andhra Pradesh which has almost 1 crore people living in urban slums, Maharashtra being one of the leading state which has established Slum Rehabilitation Board and Authority is now a defunct authority which is running more like a court rather than facilitating the redevelopment and rehabilitation of slums. In last two years, hardly any projects were sanctioned. It has failed to check dummy developers who approached and redeveloping slum pockets. Project stalled for many years and for want of political will, these slums are making cities like slumber. International cities like Mumbai, which have been accommodating 62% of its population in slums on 12% of total land.
