BDD chawls in Mumbai soon to be redeveloped

Total 207 chawls of Bombay Development Department – ( BDD ) constructed by British in the early twentieth century in Mumbai, located in central Mumbai are about to get a total makeover. The housing department of Maharashtra is preparing plans for the same which shall be placed for approval next month before cabinet.

About 121 chawls in Worli, 32 chawls in Naigaum, 42 chawls in Lower Parel and 12 chawls in Sewri shall be redeveloped which would give benefit to about 16,544 tenants and shall create a great low- cost housing possibility in central Mumbai  as MHADA will be the nodal agency for the project that shall be developed with the help of private developers. The developer shall provide free homes to the tenants and shall handover substantial amount of apartments to MHADA, which shall be sold at subsidized rates. The developer would be allowed to develop a part of the land for his profit purpose. After the approval of the plans, the Government shall call for tenders and shall offer the project to the highest bidder.

This development on a massive land portion on total  92.86 acres is an excellent chance for a planned development.
