Beam falls at Mono Rail site 2 died and 3 maimed

An unfortunate accident occurred at the Mono Rail site on July 1, 2011 at 6 pm. This involved toppling of a pair of guideway beams at pier location 64/65 (L & R) in 2B series i.e. from Bhakti Park to Mysore colony station at Jijamata Nagar, RCF.
There were two casualties – Baldev Singh and Dinesh Kumar – died on the spot and three people – Joga Singh, Sunil Kumar and Gautam Kumar – were injured. The injured were immediately removed to Rajawadi Hospital at Ghatkopar, and are out of danger after the treatment. The laborers employed through labor contractors by M/s. Larsen & Toubro who are the contractors for the Mono Rail Project.
The deceased will be given compensation by the contractors as per the provisions of Workmen’s Compensation Act and Contractor’s All Risk Policy.
The preliminary cause of the accident seems to be failure of the support system that caused failing of the left beam on the ground and toppling of the adjacent beam.
The contractors i.e. M/s. LTSE have been directed to carry out a safety audit which they will do through their Safety Head and Design Head. The report is expected in the next three days.
Similarly the Project Management Consultants M/s. Louis Berger are also carrying out their investigations and submitting report in three days.
In addition to this, MMRDA is in the process of appointing an independent inquiry committee of experts to investigate into the matter.
This is an accident occurred while carrying out a high precision beam alignment activity on one of the sharpest curves in the overall alignment.
