Housing and basic services for the economically weaker sections have got a fillip in this year’s Budget. Besides Rs 700crore for water and power reforms, the city has received a grant of Rs 1,350crore, of which Rs 700crore is for development projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

The city government is expected to combine the central allocation of Rs 2,050crore under these heads with the final proposals for its own Rs 32,000-crore budget. Since Delhi is under President’s Rule, the state budget will be tabled before the Parliament for approval later this month.

Of the Rs 1,350-crore central allocation, Rs 325crore represents Delhi’s share in central taxes and a like amount is provided as central assistance under the plan head. JNNURM projects have received Rs 700crore. Rajiv Awas Yojana forms a key component of JNNURM for providing housing to the economically weaker sections. In Delhi, thousands of houses built under the project lie unused on the outskirts of the city due to a slow allotment process that has been hounded by controversies.

Sources said the Rs 1,350-crore allocation was sanctioned by the UPA government in the Interim Budget before the Lok Sabha polls. The BJP government has kept the sanctioned amount intact. Under the non-plan head, Delhi has got Rs 50lakh for enhanced compensation to victims of the 1984 riots and Rs 2crore for improvement of the statistical system.
