The Cabinet is likely to approve and clear the Nagpur Metro project today. PM Narendra Modi has visited the city to lay the foundation stone for the 39km corridor. Sources said after the public investment board (PIB) approved the proposal, a formal approval from the finance ministry came on Tuesday. The estimated cost of the Metro rail project is around Rs 8,500 crore. The project is being expedited about one-and-a-half months before the Maharashtra assembly polls. The project will be implemented through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) and would be funded jointly by the urban development ministry and the Maharashtra government. Modi is scheduled to visit Maharashtra for the second time on Thursday after he became PM.
Just before the LS polls, transport minister Kamal Nath had given an in-principle approval to the Nagpur Metro project. The Congress-NCP state government had tried hard to have the ‘bhoomipujan’ before the Lok Sabha elections, but the project had not been cleared by several ministries.
“The PM won’t lay the foundation stone for an uncleared project. There is little doubt that the Cabinet won’t clear this proposal before the grand ceremony is held,” said an official. Modi will be laying the foundation stone for a road project in Nagpur.
