Chief Minister Ashok Chavan scrapped a plan that would have destroyed the ecosystem in Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani area. Chavan struck down many clauses in the new regional plan which would have allowed nearly 100 hotels to come up in the region. He announced the appointment of an IAS officer to check the development in the area.
The regional plan was prepared by the Pune divisional commissioner. The Government has also appointed City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) for town planning.
The regional plan had proposed to have 320 hectares of land for the expansion of the gaothan (villages), but only 157 hectares was allowed.
Another proposal to construct hotels on 200 hectares outside the municipal council was rejected. The changes were final and the proposal would be sent to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests in Delhi.
