MMRDA demolishes 181 illegal structures
The illegal hutments have been removed to develop the Metro Car Depot
Mumbai, January 29, 2010 – The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) today, in its demolition drive, razed 181 illegal hutments in Sahayog Nagar, Village Ambivali, near Four Bungalows, Andheri (West), to ease development of the Metro Car Depot.
“The land in question belongs to MMRDA and was required for the development of Metro Car Depot. However, the encroachment was proving a major hurdle. Today’s demolition will now facilitate development of the Car Depot, which is crucial for the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro route”, said Mr.Dilip Kawathkar, Joint Project Director (PR), MMRDA..
A few disgruntled and interested – but unidentified – elements tried to disrupt the demolition by setting up a few huts on fire. The fire was dozed by the Fire Brigade in good time without any casualties by fire. However, two MMRDA bulldozer drivers were injured by the stones pelted by those whose illegal shanties were brought down.
