Dharavi Sports Complex construction in full swing

Partial works of swimming pools and complex completedMumbai December 9, 2010: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA) project of state-of-the-art sports complex at Dharavi is in full swing and civil works on two swimming pools and the complex building up to first floor is nearing completion.
The authorities expect the project to be completed in scheduled time period and would open for public very soon. The project cost is estimated at Rs 10 crore. Mr Dilip Kawathkar, Joint Project Director (PR), MMRDA said, “One swimming pool of semi-Olympic size of 25×25 meter, and another learner’s swimming pool (12.5×12.5 meter) is completed partially. The construction of the main building has also completed up to first floor along with the basement.”
Location for the project is earmarked the Mahim Nature, a part of H block of the Bandra Kurla Complex between Dharavi bus depot and ONGC complex on CTS No. 531. Mr Kawathkar further said, “Once completed, this project would boost sports culture in the city and would be an ideal facility for budding gymnasts and athletes. It would also change the landscape of Dharavi providing it a new identity which otherwise is looked upon only as a slum sprawling area.”
The total area of the Dharavi Sports complex is 12427 sq.mtr. The building would have auditorium with capacity of 340 people, gymnasium with modern equipments, indoor games like, badminton and Table Tennis, conference room, cafeteria, library, separate dormitories for men and women, stores, guest room and changing rooms.
Among outdoor sports facilities, the complex will have 200 meter 5-lane running track, another 100 meter running track, Basket Ball court, Kho-kho ground, two Kabaddi grounds, two Volleyball courts, spectator gallery with capacity of 300 persons and proposed administrative building.
