Encroachment of Railway Land

Indian Railways have approximately 10.65 lakh acre of land. About 90 per cent of this land is under Railway’s operational and allied usage. The land which is presently vacant measures approximately 1.13 lakh acre and is required for Railways own developmental works such as doubling, gauge conversion, yard remodeling and traffic facility works, setting up of factories and other infrastructural works, freight corridors etc. in addition to servicing of track and other infrastructure.

Railways also plan to utilize its plots of vacant land, not required for its immediate future operational needs, for setting up Health Care Facilities and Educational Institutions. Proposals in this regard are in formative stage.

Railways maintain position of encroachments Zone-wise and not state/district-wise. Railways are engaged in a continuous exercise to remove encroachments from Railway land as per provisions of Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorized Occupants) Act, 1971.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways, Shri E. Ahamed in a written reply in Rajya Sabha on 12.11.10.
