Govt plans to sanction 12 lakh houses in 115 backward districts

As per the official document, the centre identified 115 backward districts for development and targets to sanction over 12 lakh houses within 18 months under a housing scheme.

At present, under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) 6.32 lakh houses have been sanctioned for these districts.

According to Housing and Urban Affairs ministry data, there is call for over 18 lakh houses in these districts which account for 8 percent of the total population.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently interacted with collectors and officer’s in-charge of these districts here.

Under Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), 249 urban local bodies (ULBs) or 48 percent of the total 517 in these districts have bagged the Open Defecation Free (ODF) status.

Projects worth Rs 6,021 crore would be spent to improve coverage of water supply and sewerage in the identified districts under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme.
