Soon National Capital is going to face Assembly elections and the two main parties contesting the elections has housing in their manifesto. The Congress party and Aam Aadmi Party has promised voters to provide shelters to the homeless, if they win the assembly elections.
Congress has promised the citizens that it would provide housing to all slum dwellers here if voted to power, a day after party vice president Rahul Gandhi promised right to shelter to the poor in the national capital.
Congress campaign chief Ajay Maken said, “Our parties manifesto for the elections is to provide housing for slum dwellers, if we win, we will pass a bill in the assembly which will benefit all the slum dwellers of the capital. This bill will ensure multi-storey flats of 25 to 40 square metre area to every family living in slums.”
As per the 2011 census out of the total Delhi population of 1.64 crore, 18 lakh live in slums.
On the other hand the Aam Aadmi Party, in its soon-to-be released manifesto, will committee to provide affordable housing fpor poor and middle class.
The party said it will redevelop around “200 acre of land” owned by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) which is currently unused in areas such as Kasturba Niketan, Savda Ghevra and Bhalaswa.
A senior party leader said, “DUSIB has around 200 acre of land lying unused in Outer Delhi areas. So, we will use the unused land for affordable housing for the economically weaker sections and also the middle class.”
The party cited a provision under the DUSIB Act, which says that the Board “may prepare schemes for housing of those belonging to economically weaker sections including low income group and poor categories”.
