In a bid to encourage housing societies to go green, Mumbai’s civic body the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) offers a tax rebate to reduce, reuse and recycle. A proposal under the civic body’s consideration mandates property tax deduction for housing societies that successfully reduce garbage generated.
Under the scheme, if a society segregates waste into wet and dry, and composite it, it will get a discount of 10% on the property taxes. The biggest gainers will be those societies that manage zero garbage. The proposal mandates housing complexes in the city that eliminate the entire amount of waste collected, transported and disposed of, will get the highest rebate of 20% on the property taxes.
The move came as an attempt to reduce the burden on the old and over-used existing landfills in the city.
The solid waste management department is currently framing guidelines of the proposal. If approved, the policy will be implemented post budget next year.
