Mumbai, September 15, 2010 – Mr.Ratnakar Gaikwad, Metropolitan Commissioner, today instituted Best Engineer Award for the MMRDA engineers while celebrating 149th Birth Anniversary of and Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. “It will be a great source of inspiration for our engineers to receive an Award named after the engineering wizard and the recipient of Bharat Ratna. It will also mark a fitting tribute to Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya on the occasion of his 150th Birth Anniversary which falls on September 15, next year. We will recognize three engineers”, said Mr.Gaikwad.
“The recipients of Best Engineer Award will have to show exceptional work skills keeping awake to the social and environmental responsibilities”, said Mr.Gaikwad further. “We are yet to finalize the norms but the recipients have to come up with some breakthrough technology and or plan which will be cost effective, sustainable, durable and above all must provide solution to an otherwise complicated predicament concerning public at large”, Mr.Gaikwad emphasized before more than 100 MMRDA engineers who had gathered to celebrate Engineer’s Day and remember Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
Speaking on the occasion Mr.SVR Srinivas, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner, and Ms. Ashwini Bhide, Joint Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, both stressed on the need to capacity building and adopting new technology. Both said, “While it is laudable that MMRDA engineers have been performing their duty sincerely, it is necessary that they now adopt and adapt newer technology and widen their horizons with public cause in mind”.
Also present on the occasion were Mr.S.N.Singh, Railway Bridge Engineer; Mr.PRK Murthy, Chief, Transport and Communication, MMRDA; Mr.S.R.Nandargikar, Chief Engineer, MMRDA and Mr.P.G.Godbole, Chief Engineer, MMRDA, among others.
Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya, an eminent Indian engineer (from College Of Engineering, Pune (COEP)) and statesman was born in Muddenahalli-Kanivenarayanapura – present day Karnataka. He served as the Chief Engineer during construction of Krishna Raja Sagara on the Kaveri River near Mysore. He also built many dams in the Bombay presidency – present day Maharashtra. The dams built by him are functional even today – a testimony to his brilliance, skill, honesty and dedication. September 15th is celebrated as Engineer’s Day every year.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has been celebrating the Birth Anniversary of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya for the last three years.
