The findings of Independent studies conducted by the Ministry of Rural Development indicate that out-migration from villages has gone down due to implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, MGNREGA. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha yesterday, Minister of State for Rural Development Shri Pradeep Jain Said that that his Ministry is implementing various rural development schemes to fulfill basic needs and creating rural infrastructure through the schemes like MGNREGA. The rural job act provides guaranteed wage employment of 100 days in a financial year to a rural household whose adult members are willing to take up manual work.
In a related development, the Rural Development Ministry has recently notified 30 new works under MGNREGA, majority of which are related to agricultural and allied activities. The works likely to boost the rural economy have been divided into 10 broad categories like Watershed, Irrigation and Flood management works, Agricultural and Livestock related works, Fisheries and works in coastal areas and the Rural Drinking water and Sanitation related works. The demand for new works has come mainly from the States like Kerala, Sikkim, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan based on the ground realities in each of the region.
