With making new provisions in the Development Control Regulation (DCR) of the Development Plan 2034, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will soon provide parking lots and will fix charges for parking and the penalties for illegal parking as per the demand of the area and the ready reckoner rates. The new DCR has mandated independent ‘Parking Authority’ which will regulate on street parking and public parking in the city.

As per the provisions in Chapter X of the DCR in DP 2034, under ‘Parking Authority’, the DCR states: “BMC, in consultation with government of Maharashtra, shall constitute a Parking Authority at the BMC level to plan, regulate and manage all on street parking and public parking places under the physical jurisdiction of Greater Mumbai. The constituted Parking Authority, inter alia, will fix and promulgate parking fees as well as penalties for various areas/zones in BMC.”

Currently, there are parking lots made available in the city by railways, MMRDA and the BMC along with private parking lots. However, there is no co-ordination amongst them. The new Parking Authority, which will be under the BMC, will not only fix the confusion over the regulating the parking lots, but also decide on the parking fees and penalties. “If all the parking lots are regulated by one single authority then such planning will be easier for the civic body to co-ordinate between all the parking lots,” said municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta.
