Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has decided to go after the property tax defaulters. The general body for tax recovery has set a specific target to recover property tax in the year 2017-18.

However, the property department has managed to recover Rs 432 crore from 3.8 lakh payers till February. Whereas more Rs 388 crore has to be recovered from the given number of payers.

According to an official of NMMC property department said, “Although it won’t be possible to achieve the set target because the primary source of property tax from Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and TTC belt is under legal dispute and the court has order not to take coercive measures against defaulters.”

“So a major chunk of the taxes cannot be recovered. But we are positive of the figure going up by another Rs 200 crore by tracking down defaulters in other areas,” It further added.

The property tax helps the government to bring developments in the city.
