The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) was anxious over “unsatisfactory” progress in smart city projects, an official said.

In a review of smart city projects by the MoHUA, it was flagged that Guwahati and Dharamshala were lagging behind in the implementation of projects under the Centre’s Smart City Mission, the ministry official added.

An official said, for speeding up the projects the ministry has also decided to approach these cities to find out the “bottlenecks”.

Cities in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra needed to speed up the implementation process, whereas cities in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar were found to be “performing well” under the mission, the official said.

Under the mission, each city will get Rs 500 crore as central assistance for implementing various projects. Total 90 cities have been selected so far by the government.
