Soon a sports complex at your doorstep!

Mumbai: A multi-facility sports complex at Dharavi is almost ready and soon will be thrown open to public. It’s an MMRDA initiative. “While the infrastructure development remains of paramount significance for us, we feel, encouragement to creating sporting culture makes it a total development. The sports complex would be an ideal facility for budding gymnasts and athletes”, said Mr. Rahul Asthana, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA.
The rupees 21-crore Dharavi Sports Complex, situated between ONGC complex and Dharavi Bus Depot, has been built over a 12,430 square meters of plot with the main structure enjoying 6,645 square meters making available facilities such as Squash, Billiards, Badminton, Table Tennis, Carrom and a sophisticated gymnasium. There are grounds available for Kabaddi and Kho-Kho along with courts for Basket Ball and Volley Ball. The swimming pool of semi-Olympic size of 25×25 meters and another for learners admeasuring 12.5×12.5 meters will be the center of attraction.
Besides these facilities, the complex also offers 200 and 100 meter running tracks, a spectator gallery with capacity of about 300 people, an auditorium that can accommodate more than 300 people, a conference room, a library, separate dormitories for men and women, stores, bank, ATM, guest rooms, changing rooms and a cafeteria.
“The complex will be ready once the work of installation of lifts, air-conditioning and other electrification is over. After the complex is fully ready we will hand it over to the District Sports and Youth Welfare department of the Government of Maharashtra and they will run and maintain the same”, said Mr. Dilip Kawathkar, Joint Project Director.
