Almost 3 lakh concrete houses shall be constructed under Kalaignar Housing Scheme at a cost of Rs 1,800 crore that shall replace the huts in the state of Tamilnadu.
The Tamilnadu Government shall issue work orders on August ,15th 2010.
Each of the dwelling unit with an area of 200 sq ft, will cost Rs 60,000. The project shall be implemented with state funds that would provide concrete houses to over 21 lakh rural hut dwellers by the year 2016 and shall make Tamil Nadu, the first state in the country to become hut-free.
The process of identifying beneficiaries for the project has been finalised. With the issuance of work orders commencing on August 15 which coincides with the Independence Day, the construction activity is expected to begin from September, 2010
The government shall supply cement sourced from the TamilNadu Cements Corporation Ltd (TANCEM) and steel for which local tenders had been finalised. For supply of bricks, self help groups would be encouraged to set up brick kilns. Godowns to store the construction materials had already been identified by respective agencies.
Since there are large no. of houses to be built, the Government is trying to provide training in masonry to people whom are interested. Special schemes have been worked out for such people as well.
